Chinesische Bergarbeiter spitz auf Namibias Spitzmaul-Nashörner? / Chinese Miners pose a threat for Namibia’s Rhinos

Mining projects in the northwest of Namibia pose a new threat to the protection of rhinos, says Marcia Stanton, the new CEO of the Save The Rhino Trust. There has been a poaching incident in December last year, which apparently was linked to a Chinese mining operation in the northwestern area of Namibia. The SRT is working in close cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) and communal conservancies to prevent developments such as in South Africa, where Rhino poaching is a major problem. Currently there are 1,750 black and 469 white rhino living in Namibia.

Bergbau-Projekte asiatischer Konzerne in Namibia stellen eine neue Gefahr für den Schutz der Nashörner dar. Das sagte Marcia Stanton, die neue Geschäftsführerin des “Save The Rhino Trust (SRT)” gegenüber Hitradio Namibia. Im Dezember habe es einen Fall von Wilderei gegeben, bei dem die Spuren offenbar zu einer chinesischen Bergbau-Firma geführt hätten. Der SRT arbeite mit dem Umweltministerium und kommunalen Gemeinschaften daran, einer Entwicklung wie in Südafrika vorzubeugen, so Stanton. Derzeit leben in Namibia 1.750 Spitzmaul- und 469 Breitmaul- Nashörner.
